This striking contemporary home in St. Albans, Hertfordshire required something a little different. At LB Window Systems, we were asked not only to replace the original timber windows and doors but also to help realise a unique customer request: sourcing and installing aluminium louvre windows as part of the project.
Modern Aluminium Windows, Doors and Louvres
The house in Ayot St Laurence features a bold architectural design with angled walls, exposed concrete and grey slate cladding. Working closely with the client, we supplied and installed a full suite of aluminium glazing products, including:
• Slimline aluminium windows with large top-hung openings
• A new front door with glazed side panel and full-height toplight
• A two-panel sliding door with integrated trickle ventilation
• Bespoke aluminium louvre windows sourced from Europe
All windows and doors were finished in a dark grey powder-coated frame to complement the building’s modern style and contrast with the rendered and slate façades.
Replacing Top-Swing Reversible Timber Windows
Many of the original windows on this property were dated top-swing reversible units , common in timber and old metal windows. Whilst still available in aluminium, pivot windows are used more commercially. You can also find them in a restricted form in high level windows on apartment buildings.
Instead of replacement with modern pivot windows, the soluration was a top hung casement. One of the advantages of aluminium casement windows today over uPVC, is that it is capable of larger opening sizes. Our slimline aluminium windows provided the ideal replacement, offering:
• Cleaner lines and minimal framing
• Improved energy performance
• Greater natural light
• Secure, top-hung openers for upstairs bedrooms and living areas
Bespoke Aluminium Louvre Window Integration

The most technically interesting part of this St Albans house project involved the client’s request for aluminium louvre windows — a glazing style more commonly found in European homes, particularly in warmer climates where airflow is key.
Louvre windows use individual glass blades that open in unison to allow for controlled ventilation. Unlike standard openers, louvres let air circulate while maintaining a degree of security, as they don’t expose a full window opening.
Because suitable products are not commonly available in the UK, we sourced a European aluminium louvre window system and integrated it into one of the long horizontal windows in the home. The result is a fully functional, modern aluminium louvre window with:
• High airflow potential
• Weather-sealed blade mechanism
• Contemporary flush frame
• Manual crank handle operation
This feature makes a real difference to ventilation in that part of the house and delivers a unique design detail.

Entrance Door and Sliding Door Design
To match the new windows, the front door features a minimalist single sash with a glazed flag side window and a full-height fixed toplight. The aluminium sliding door to the rear of the home uses a two-panel Origin system — a trusted, smooth-running design ideal for modern renovations. We also ensured full compliance with ventilation requirements by including trickle vents to the head of the sliding frame.
New Glazed Aluminium Front Door

In key locations, such as the font door, this comprises an open out resential door, with flag side panes and full width fixed toplight.
When fitting such a door combination, early generation aluminium windows were avoided in this style, because of the risk of water ingress at the full width toplight.
Today, thanks to modern insulated aluminium, clever design and extensive sealing, it is possible to recreate the designs mainly done with timber doors, with latest generation aluminium.
Origin Silding Doors

At the rear of the property is a new patio door from the Origin range. Designed in a two-panel design it comes with a double track, enabling either left or right hand leaf to slide.
With contemporary bar handles, in a matching grey finish and Doors glazed with toughened safety glass, having a soft-coat low-emissivity coating, warm edge spacer bars and argon gas fill. Safe, secure, smooth sliding and always reliable are hallmarks of Origin patio sliding doors.
