Our brief was to replace a tired and heavily modified entrance door. Over time, the original steel welded doors had been adapted repeatedly to accommodate the changing building requirements, as is often the case with such multiple use dwellings.

Hardware had been replaced and as security needed upgrading to the best possible, the magnetic security locks were fixed on the face of the doors. Not only is this the wrong location for them, but also leaves the security hardware vulnerable to attack.

The result was an entrance that no longer looked coherent, with exposed components prone to damage and a finish that had deteriorated through weathering and lack of routine cleaning maintenance.

With two magnetic locks already in use, security and controlled access were critical. Just as important was delivering a clean, professional entrance that reflected the standard expected of a private residential building.

Overall, an original set of doors that had not been looked after well, with a legacy detail that modern shopfront and entrance systems no longer require. The powder coating had faded significantly, and the various add-on hardware components had become visually dominant and vulnerable to impact.
